The Local Categories comprises of three categories:

Category1:Creating New Product,Process or Technology

This category covers the invention of a new product, process or technology that did not exist previously. The category is open to the public and members of institutions of higher learning, who have developed or wish to develop a suitable product, process or project. This category is open to individuals as well as teams.

Category 2:Modifying Existing Product,Process or Technology

This category covers a new modification(s) of an existing product, process or technology that can improve or enhance its function or quality. are open to the members of the public and institutions of higher learning, who have developed or wish to develop a suitable product, process or project. This category is open to individuals as well as teams.

Category 3: Creating New or Modifying Existing Product, Process or Technology, by Young Inventors


This category covers the invention of a new product, process or technology as well as modification(s) to any existing product, process or technology, that can improve or enhance its functionality or quality. It is open to Bruneian school students ranging from the upper secondary to pre-university levels or equivalent to Year 10 to Year 13 on Monday, 27 January 2025.

Rules and Regulations

  1. The innovation/product submitted for Categories 1, 2 and 3 must be in the form of hardware or a combination of hardware and software. Software-only products are not acceptable.
  2. The Local Categories are open to all Bruneian residents with a valid Brunei identity card.
  3. For Category 3, the participant(s) must be enrolled in a Bruneian school with levels ranging from the upper secondary to pre-university or equivalent to Year 10 to Year 13 on Monday, 27 January 2025.
  4. A participant can join the competition as an individual or as a member of a team. Each team can have a maximum of three members (including the team leader). No changes of team members are allowed after the submission deadline.
  5. Each participant can be involved in one entry only.
  6. For Category 3, each entry must be supervised by a teacher and be nominated and endorsed by the participant’s institution.
  7. For individual entry, the participant must be a yellow/purple identity card holder.
  8. For team entry, there must be at least one yellow/purple identity card holder within the team.
  9. For Category 3, the Approval and Endorsement Form must be completed by the Supervisor.
  10. For ALL Categories, the Declaration section of the entry form must be checked.
  11. Incomplete or late entries will not be accepted.
  12. Each entry needs to provide a preliminary description of the innovation/product in the Proposal Form. Further instructions can be found in the form. It can be written either in Malay or English language. The final innovation/product submitted for the judging phase must not be significantly different from the preliminary description.
  13. The entries will be reviewed for eligibility and participants of shortlisted entries will be notified.
  14. Participants of shortlisted entries will be required to produce a final report that provides a detailed description of the innovation/product. Further instructions will be provided accordingly.
  15. The innovation/product must be original and has not been published, submitted to other international competitions or copied from other sources. Many past entries have been disqualified as a result of having been entered into other competitions and the participants are hereby informed of this.
  16. Before the judging day, the innovation/product has to be set-up and displayed for judges’ evaluation, either in prototype form or by other appropriate means if the former is not feasible, at UTB, Brunei Darussalam.
  17. During the judging day, participants have to deliver a presentation on the innovation/product for the purpose of evaluations at UTB, Brunei Darussalam.
  18. Participants need to make their own arrangements to come in person to set-up and present their innovations/products at UTB, Brunei Darussalam. UTB, as the organiser, will not be providing any support in presenting their innovations/products except for basic equipment like a projector and a computer.
  19. All decisions of UTB (including those of the short-listing and judging panels) are final, and no correspondence will be entered into

Assessment Criteria

Suitable judges for the assessment and evaluation of the work will be identified and appointed by the organising committee. The rules and guidelines for judging the work will be prepared by the organising committee. The assessment of the entries will be conducted in two stages:

Stage 1:

Preliminary Assessment   All entries will undergo a preliminary assessment. Only qualified entries will be allowed to proceed into Stage 2 of the competition.

Stage 2:

 Final Assessment   Teams and individuals of the selected projects will have to present and exhibit or to make arrangements to be assessed by the judges for their final assessments. The winners of Categories 1 and 2 may be nominated for the Crown Prince Special Award and will compete against the nominee from the ASEAN New Invention & Innovation Category

The highest score projects related to renewable energy from each category may be nominated for the Special Award for Sustainable Energy.
The criteria for judging the projects may include the following:

  1. Novelty and creativity.
  2. Deployment of end product.
  3. Relevance to the theme.
  4. Social, Economic and Sustainable design considerations.
  5. Report and Presentation of project.

The highest scoring projects related to renewable energy from each category may be nominated for the Special Award for Sustainable Energy to win cash prizes and certificates:

Category 3 - B$ 1,000.00 cash and certificate

All participants will be issued Certificate of Participation.
