“BEYOND THE GLASS CEILING”

Background

Women are powerful agents of change, and yet, women around the world often take on the challenge of being underrepresented in making executive decisions. Becoming a leader moves beyond the idea of simply assuming the role; a fundamental identity shift is vital.

Glass ceiling, a commonly used metaphor to describe an unseen barrier that prevents women from reaching the elite position in their workplaces. In this women's leadership forum, an extraordinary group of women will share their insights and experiences on how they take their leadership and management skills to another level, moving beyond the said glass ceiling.

A particular focus of this forum is the strive for work-life balance (WLB) in women’s leadership. Despite its plethora of definitions, WLB is often defined as the ability of an individual to accomplish the goals set in work and personal lives, as established by the individual’s priorities. The pressing demand of achieving the said balance is often difficult and hence, the UTB Women’s Leadership Forum 2023 hopes to address the challenges faced by women leaders in Brunei Darussalam and how they overcome those trials to be where they are today. This forum aspires to inspire future women to lead in various sectors and to move beyond women empowerment.

Sub-theme 1. The women professionals of today. The women professionals, often defined as women who have professions or business careers, require them to shift their roles and responsibilities in and outside of their workplaces. In this theme, we look at how women professionals successfully balance these roles and responsibilities.

Sub-theme 2. Women leaders in STEM: Addressing the gap. The changing socio-cultural landscape and increasing educational opportunities have allowed women to explore and develop their skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The equal representation of women leaders in this discipline is more significant than ever. This theme aims to discuss the important issue of WLB for women in STEM and the mindset strategies used to overcome the challenges faced that hinder their success in STEM discipline.

Sub-theme 3. Work-life balance. Work-life balance (WLB) has recently become a contemporary interest in research and policy due to the nature of today's fast-paced society. A plethora of WLB definitions have emerged over the years and will continue to evolve. This theme looks at WLB from different perspectives and discusses how women achieve a healthy balance between meeting deadlines at work and time for friends and family.

This forum presents an opportunity for networking and as a valuable platform of information. The forum is opened to public with invited working professionals, entrepreneurs, and emerging leaders.
