Capacity-Building Workshop on: Green Audits: Pathways to a Low-Carbon Future, Part 1

Introduction

Rising global emissions have made climate action an urgent and critical priority. As the need to transition to low-carbon practices become increasingly apparent, there is a growing demand for practical tools and methodologies that enable communities and organizations to measure, manage, and reduce their environmental impact.

Green audits which assess energy consumption, resource efficiency, and associated carbon emissions serve as an effective mechanism to support this transition.

Green Audits: Pathways to a Low-Carbon Future, Part 1 is a capacity-building workshop designed to equip participants with the knowledge, skills, and tools required to carry out effective green and carbon audits. The workshop is jointly organised by the Standing Committee for Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH) of the Organisation of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Centre for Green Technology and Sustainability Research (GreenTeXS) at Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB), under the UTB-STE Connect 2025 congress event. This two-day programme aims to develop participants’ competency in environmental auditing, enabling them to apply their skills to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in their homes, workplaces, or institutions.

Objectives

The workshop aims to:

  • Develop participants’ foundational skills in conducting green and carbon audits.
  • Demonstrate how audit findings can support low-carbon planning and climate action strategies.
  • Demonstrate building design auditing as a tool for enhancing sustainability and energy efficiency in the built environment.
  • Introduce renewable energy integration, particularly solar technologies, within auditing frameworks.
  • Promote understanding of sustainability standards, carbon accounting protocols, and energy efficiency practices.
  • Foster knowledge sharing and collaboration among stakeholders in energy, environment, policy, and academia.

Workshop Format

The workshop will be delivered as follows:

  1. Lectures from experts
  2. Group work with hands-on sessions
  3. Group presentations

Workshop Materials

  1. Audit checklists and templates (excel spreadsheet)
  2. Energy and carbon calculators
  3. Case study handouts
  4. Workshop handbook or e-resource pack
